Bruce Silver ABPMP Webinar Speaker Now over a decade old, BPMN is by far the most widely adopted standard in BPM. Nevertheless, the quality of most BPMN models is overall quite bad, and many BPM practitioners don’t use it at all. Much of this problem can be blamed on the BPMN 2.0 specification itself. Its rules defining valid vs invalid models focus on operational semantics – meaning ability to be executed on a process automation engine – rather than BPMN’s real mission, which is communicating process logic clearly in a diagram. Fulfilling that mission requires additional principles of design and rules of usage layered on top of the rules of the spec, an approach I call BPMN Method and Style.

This talk will summarize the BPMN Method and Style approach. The Method part is a prescriptive methodology for translating the many pages of notes collected at process discovery sessions with the SMEs into diagrams that communicate the activity flow clearly and completely to someone who does not already know it or even the modeler’s terminology. The Method also addresses a major source of BPMN structural errors, which is the requirement that the instances of each process activity correspond one-to-one with the process instance itself. BPMN Style has evolved into a set of rules that help make the logic of even complex models clear from the printed diagrams alone. Some BPMN tools can validate models against the style rules, which not only improves the quality of the resulting diagrams but dramatically accelerates the learning curve for the modeler.

About the speaker: Bruce Silver

Dr Bruce Silver is Principal at both Bruce Silver Associates ( and BPMessentials (, a worldwide provider of BPMN training and certification. He served on the technical committee in OMG that developed the BPMN 2.0 specification. His book BPMN Method and Style, now in its second edition, has been translated into German, Japanese, and soon Spanish as well. He has developed numerous tools to support the Method and Style approach, including style rule validation, Method wizard, and bpmnPRO, a gamification-based eLearning app. He is also founder and co-chair of bpmNEXT, an annual showcase of the next generation of BPM technology. He is currently working on a new book, DMN Method and Style, which applies Method and Style principles to the new decision modeling standard.

Previously, Dr Silver directed workflow and document management research at BIS Strategic Decisions (which became Giga Information Group, now part of Forrester Research), and before that managed software development and marketing organizations. He served on the board of directors of Captiva Software until its acquisition by EMC. He holds Physics degrees from Princeton and MIT, and four patents in imaging and workflow.
