Announcing the ABPMP Associate Level BPM Practitioner’s Certification: CBPA®
The Association of Business Process Management Professionals International (ABPMP) is pleased to announce an associate level Business Process Management (BPM) practitioner certification: The Certified Business Process Associate (CBPA®). This certification can be earned by having either 1,250 hours of documented hands-on experience in a BPM related area OR a 4 year qualifying university degree and passing a comprehensive test. You may substitute qualified education or professional BPM training for up to 625 hours credit towards the work experience requirement if you do not have a qualifying university degree. The examination is specifically designed to challenge your understanding of the various BPM disciplines and the techniques that are used to improve business operations and enable organizational transformation.
ABPMP now offers two levels of certification for business process management and transformation professionals. The first level is for individuals who may be fairly new to the business transformation profession. This is the Certified Business Process Associate (CBPA®) certification. It is meant to recognize broad-based foundation level skills and understanding. These professionals have a solid understanding of BPM concepts and may have some work experience the field, but do not have the full four years of hands-on experience required for the second level of certification – the Certified Business Process Professional (CBPP®). In this way, the CBPA® is the foundation and through additional training and experience in live business improvement/ transformation projects, the CBPA® holder will become eligible to sit for the CBPP® certification.
This certification is thus the first step on the road that can lead to acquiring a CBPP® certification and recognition as having acquired the highest level of competency as a BPM professional practitioner. It is also a solid confirmation of an individual’s understanding of and interest in implementing BPM solutions for their clients and employers.
The Association of Business Process Management Professionals International (ABPMP)
ABPMP is the largest and most prestigious worldwide professional association for BPM Professionals – with chapters and associate organizations around the globe. The association offers a common body of knowledge (BPM-CBOK®) that was compiled by experts — leading BPM practitioners and recognized authors who are continually helping companies improve their operations. It is recognized as a leading source of business transformation information in the market.
Recognized by such professional organizations as Gartner, Forrester, BPTrends, and BPM.com as well as many consulting firms, the ABPMP professional certification is well known throughout the business process management and transformation professions.
Who should sit for the CBPA® examination?
The Certified Business Processing Associate certificate is focused on the new BPM practitioner. The target for this certification is the practitioner who has completed (or is in the process of completing) his or her undergraduate degree or has been working in a business process management related role for at least one year. The exam demonstrates the credential holder’s understanding of business process improvement and transformation concepts across the disciplines covered by the BPM Common Body of Knowledge (BPM-CBOK®).
The CBPA® certification allows people who are newer to the profession to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts, approaches, techniques and technology that are needed to succeed in BPM and helps them stand out among their peers. These types of skills are highly valued by major global corporations, government, and consulting organizations across all industry groups.
The CBPA® certificate is more than an academic certification or a certificate of study. It is intended to independently verify that the individual holding the certificate has a solid level of basic competency in the area of business process management and may have actually applied the concepts in day-to-day work experience.

Preparing for the CBPA®
Much of the content contained in the exam is based on the BPM Common Body of Knowledge. A complimentary copy of the BPM-CBOK® is available through a paid membership in ABPMP International or in one of our affiliated BPM organizations in Europe and Brazil. It is also available for direct purchase on our website. Those who apply will receive an examination overview handbook with a list of recommended reading sources – books, articles and columns by leading business process management authors and other tips to help prepare for the exam. These will acquaint the CBPA® applicant with various viewpoints on business transformation concepts, approaches, techniques and methods adopted by ABPMP. This reading will serve as the foundation for independent study and discussion with other practitioners. A growing number of organizations offer courses and review materials to help you prepare for CBPA® examination through the ABPMP International Registered Training Provider (RTP) Program.
Hands-on project experience with business process modeling, performance management and rules management is another way to qualify for the CBPA® certification exam. This hands-on experience is considered valuable in providing an understanding of how the concepts and techniques addressed in the recommended reading are being applied in real-world situations. Many credential holders obtain their hands-on experience by working on projects involving business software implementation, business process analysis, six-sigma, quality control, or business process improvement projects. Others gain their experience by working in day-to-day operations involving business process monitoring or control.
In addition to the study tips provided in the CBPA® Exam Overview Handbook, there is a sample exam available for candidates. It has 20 multiple choice questions that are representative of the exam and the format used.
Registration is open to any practitioner who has completed 1,250 hours (one year) of hands-on experience in two or more BPM disciplines as defined by the BPM-CBOK®OR has a qualifying four-year college or university degree. The work experience can be through an internship program, on live BPM related project(s) or as part of the individual’s normal work responsibilities. In addition, the applicant should have a detailed understanding of the terminology and how to apply the concepts presented in the BPM-CBOK®. College or university degrees in BPM, Management, Finance, Engineering or a variety of related sciences related to business process and organization also qualify a candidate to sit for the exam.
